This will allow as much air flow as possible to get thru the coil making it as effective as possible.  Remember it is important to keep your a/c unit free of debris. Anything laying on or piled up next to the a/c can cause lower air flow and give you similar problems. As a general rule the air coming out of the top of you a/c should be about 30 degrees hotter than the outside air temperature. If the air coming out is hotter than that you have an issue somewhere.
