AC REPAIR- Save Money

AC Repair

Here are a few tips that might save you some money and help prevent an ac repair this summer.  The most important way to prevent an ac repair is to replace your filter.  This filter is normally located above your furnace. The filters help to not only clean the air in your home.  Your filter also keeps that dirt from collecting on your furnace and a/c coil.  You should always use a quality pleated filter and replace it every 3 to 6 months.  On average a good 1” filter will cost you about $6 to $9, and most furnaces take 2 filters.  If you do not know where your filter is feel free to give us a call.  We can usually walk you through it.  As strange as it sounds dirty filters are our #1 call for ac repair.

Cleaning The A/C

Second way to help prevent an ac repair is to keep your outdoor ac coil clean and free of debris.  Like your indoor coil, your outdoor coil needs to stay clean also but has no filter to keep it clean.  The best way to clean this coil is with a garden hose and to wash through the coil at a 45 degree angle.  Cleaning this coil helps the ac unit remove heat, the cleaner the coil the better it will remove heat.  Also the cleaner the coil the less power it will take to cool your home. In addition it will help your unit run cooling causing less need for an ac repair.

Having your ac unit serviced by a qualified company every 2 years or so is a great way to make sure your unit is working at its best, prevent ac repair, and keep it as cost effective as possible.  Just like your car, your ac unit needs routine maintenance and cleaning to keep it running its best.  This service should cost anywhere from $65 to about $125 depending on who does the work and what is done.  Some of the important items covered in this service should be cleaning the coil and electrical compartment, checking Freon levels, replacing your filters and tightening up the high voltage connections in your system.

In Closing

Many of the homes in Idaho have under sized ac units that struggle to keep the homes cool during the hottest summer months.  The best way to address this issue (apart from the above) is to make sure you do not let the house get hot to start with.  Set your thermostat to a comfortable temperature and leave it there.  This will allow the unit to catch up at night when it is cooler and start the day at a good temperature so it isn’t playing catch-up.  Other ways to help your unit keep your home cool is to make sure your blinds are closed when sun directly hits them, keep doors and windows closed as much as possible, and run your oven exhaust fan while cooking to remove the extra heat.
